What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the medical term for the perception of hearing a noise when there is none present. Tinnitus is usually subjective, which means only the person who has it can hear it. Those with tinnitus say their symptoms are most noticeable at night or when they are trying to sleep. An estimated 50 million Americans experience some degree of tinnitus in their lifetime.
It can range from mild to severe, constant or intermittent, soft or loud, or in one or both ears. The noise is often described as a buzzing, humming, ringing, high-pitched squealing, or whistling in the ears.
There are many causes of tinnitus, including:
- Exposure to loud noise
- Hearing loss
- Traumatic head or neck injury
- Stress and high blood pressure
- Reaction to medication
- Earwax blockage or infection
- Natural aging process
How We Test for Tinnitus
At Twin Rivers Hearing Health, Dr. Uchmanowicz is an expert in tinnitus and treatment solutions. She can successfully diagnose and help you manage your tinnitus, so you can experience relief. We offer tinnitus evaluations to determine what sound you are hearing and what may have caused it. We will test you in our sound booth, testing different pitches to determine the type of sound you are hearing. After the tinnitus evaluation, then Dr. Uchmanowicz will go over some solutions that will help you.
